Lower Bolton lake update - august 20, 2015
Dear Lake Resident,
Today the Bolton Lake Commissioner, Kim Welch, provided the following update on the laboratory analysis of the water samples collected from Lower Bolton Lake:
Lower Bolton Lake Cell Count of 8/17 Water Sample
Bolton Lake Residents, Neighbors and Friends,
We have LBL blue-green algae counts from water samples taken on Monday 8/17. NEAR analyzed samples from both the Indian Notch Beach area and the Western side of LBL. These counts show the blue-green algae cell count per mL. The West side count is 68,000 cells per mL. The beach area count is 70,000 cells per mL. These cell count levels are below the threshold of 100k/mL at which the DEEP recommends posted beach closure. The toxin results are not available yet.
NEAR will continue to monitor the lake conditions closely. The following agencies are informed of the conditions at LBL: DEEP, Dept of Public Health/Eastern Highlands Health District, Town of Bolton and NEAR/Northeast Aquatic Research.
With cell counts at these levels, please remind swimmers not to ingest the water when swimming, skin exposure may cause rash like symptoms and keep dogs out of the water while these conditions exist.
I will continue with updates as they are pertinent.
Regards,
Kim Welch
Bolton Lake Commissioner
[email protected]
As Kim says, the cell counts do not exceed the state guidelines requiring beach closures. Although Lower Bolton Lake remains open for recreational use, avoid contact with water where high concentrations of the blue-green algae are visible and adhere to the precautions spelled out above by Kim.
Sincerely,
The Friends of Bolton Lakes
