Best lake management Practices

Picture
Paying close attention to the health of Bolton Lakes is critical to preserving our natural resources, providing recreational opportunities and maintaining lake front property values.

Caring for our lakes requires that everyone living in the watershed or using the lakes for recreation must understand the external factors that impact water quality.

Beyond understanding, each citizen must then take an active roll in monitoring and maintaining Best Management Practices (BMP) for our lakes.

FBL will be sponsoring a number of educational programs for lake owners and users to better understand the actions they can and should take to enhance the ecological stability of Bolton Lakes.

A number of important steps include:
    - Maintaining septic systems until the Bolton/Vernon sewer project is completed
    - Monitoring invasive weed introduction at the state boat launch
    - Controlling run off and soil erosion around the perimeter of the lake
    - Reducing or eliminating fertilizer use; reducing or eliminating pesticides
    - Managing waterfowl population around and on the lake
    - Adhering to beneficial landscaping practices
    - Properly disposing of pet waste
    - Washing vehicles away from the lake

A DEEP report, Caring for Our Lakes, addresses these issues in greater detail.
